I recently rented The Invasion, knowing little about the movie other than it starred Nicole Kidman (as Carol Bennell) and the very yummy Daniel Craig (as Ben Driscoll). It turned out to be alright, though it’s definitely not the kind of flick you should take too seriously.
The movie begins with a NASA disaster - a shuttle returning from a deep-space mission explodes as it enters the Earth’s atmosphere. Chunks of debris are scattered all over the countryside. And yeah, you guessed it - the debris is contaminated with some strange alien virus, and as people are exposed to the wreckage remnants, they in turn contract the lurgies, which essentially robs them of their human emotions. And of course once contaminated, the victims try very hard to spread the virus. (How they do this is rather unpleasant and not worth going into detail about.) Yes, uh-huh. Carol’s ex-hubby (played by Jeremy Northam) is one of the first victims of the alien virus. Conveniently, he works for the US Centre for Disease Control, putting him in the perfect position to spread the nasties. Carol and her buddy Ben spend most of the movie running from the alien virus victims while trying to find Carol’s kid, cute little Oliver.
Okay, so you’re probably thinking this is not a movie you want to waste two hours of your life on, but bear in mind that Daniel Craig is one of the movie’s leads - and he even gets to keep his oh-so-sexy posh English accent. The movie has quite a few tense moments, great if you’re in the mood for a thriller - though it’s not going to keep you awake at night. However, the ending is quite anti-climatic. To be honest, when this movie was released it didn’t receive great reviews, and considering it’s based on the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, that’s not entirely surprising. But if you’re in the mood for a bit of a thriller or (sigh) Daniel Craig, The Invasion is actually that not bad.
