If you haven’t yet watched Stardust, what are you waiting for?!?
Stardust is a really sweet and charming movie that boasts a stellar cast and is filled with good humour and relatively unpredictable plot twists. At first glance, it may look like your typical run-of-the-mill fairy tale, complete with exhausted stereotypes and routine plot. But it’s so not.
In a nutshell, Stardust is the story of Tristan (played by newcomer Charlie Cox) - a young man who leaves his home in search of a fallen star. Though he ends up finding so much more than that. Tristan finds adventure, danger, intrigue - and eventually - even himself. And then of course, there’s the lurve stuff. The fallen star turns out to be a beautiful young woman, Yvaine (played by Claire Danes) who unfortunately carries a fair amount of baggage. Legend has it that when consumed, the star’s heart grants the muncher immortality. Not only are the dying King’s (dodgy) sons looking for Yvaine but so too is Lamia - a decadently evil witch played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Tristan finds Yvaine and begins the journey back to Wall Village, but of course the trip is wrought with danger.
Stardust is geared more for grown-ups. There is murder, love, intrigue and everything else you’d expect from a good story. And Yvaine isn’t your typical leading fairy tale lady. She is strong and independent - in fact, much more so than Tristan. The movie also has lots of fantastic characters who help make it so entertaining. Robert de Niro’s gay pirate captain is fabulous and the ever-present restless spirits of the murdered princes are hilarious. Michelle Pfeiffer also pulls off a pretty damn good witch – and a very evil one at that!
This magical adventure is filled with clever twists and turns, and will keep you enchanted throughout. The story itself is detailed and each character is full and expressive. And the best bit? It will leave you with that fuzzy-feel-good buzz. Enjoy the magic.
[Ed. Note: If you enjoyed the movie Stardust, why not check out the original novel by Neil Gaiman.]
