Falling Through Space by Pat West

I still wait for something to happen
but no sound comes out of my mouth
and my tears are dry.

Here in the darkness—
eyes open wide as a child’s—
I look for the hole in the sky.

Outside the wind
goes to sleep,
the birds close their mouths,

and for a moment the whole
world stops moving in order
to let him step off.

Pat West calls Portland, OR home for now. Her work appears in Labyrinth: Poems and Prose, An Eye for an Eye Makes the Whole World Blind: Poets on 9/11, Listening to the Birth of Crystals, and various webzines.
