Second Sacrifice by Penny Luker

Lines of trees are felled
from the nearby hills,
for the winter harvest.

Many homes are graced
with tall green beauty,
that enchants briefly.

Sparkling lights shed
their intermittent light,
beneath angel wings.

A second kind of death,
as life drains from branches
and needles pattern floor.

Each year Norway Spruce
give their lives for us,
like the first sacrifice.

Penny is the assistant writings editor at ATG. She writes poems and short stories and her work is being published in an anthology later this year. She is the press officer for her local branch of Soroptimist International and enjoys her work as a part time lecturer for the Open University.
